In order to retain your competitive edge within the marketplace, security is a prime consideration. The Internet has brought a enormous growth and a revolution in business processes. Sadly that is not all it has achieved. Generally, security has played a secondary role to features.

Excellent security is necessary to protect you from your competitors, and more importantly, to protect you from strangers who will ruin the smooth operation of your IT infrastructure.

A general checklist that should be a minimum for every business includes the following items:

Do you have a proper firewall securing your perimeter? This is one of the easiest security features to implement. Is the firewall up to date with the latest patches? Without updates, your perimeter can be abused to gain full access to your network.
Do you have managed anti-virus on your desktops and servers? Does it automatically update itself and perform scans while you use your desktop or access files? Without this software, all it takes is one infected email to possibly wipe out or corrupt all the important documents on your PC or server.
Do you have managed anti-spyware software installed on all your desktops? Does it automatically update itself and perform scans while you are browsing the Internet? Without this software, you are vulnerable to getting nasty software like trojans, key loggers or spyware. The software could be tracking the work that you do and reporting to a third-party over the Internet.
Are your desktop and server computers up to data with patches? Without application patches and updates, you are leaving yourself open to breaches.
Does your mail server have any sort of filtering to remove SPAM emails? This will save your staff from having to waste time sorting through junk emails.
Do you have regular backups? Any sort of security breach could ruin the integrity of your files and data. Having a backup is critical if you wish to recover uncorrupted data.
